The word adulting refers to taking on the tasks and responsibilities required for acting in the “real world.” It means that you are in charge of taking care of yourself and all the things that go along with that. Adulting can involve getting a job, keeping track of money and bills, managing your living environment, engaging in adult relationships, and keeping yourself mentally and physically healthy.
When you have severe food allergies, adulting tasks can be more challenging. Foods are a constant focus of socializing, job activities, staying healthy, and even money management since specialized foods can be harder to find and are often much more expensive. You are now the one who needs to speak up to make sure you are kept safe, and you need to be able to navigate relationships with others when food is an ever-present part of the world.
You can master the art of adulting with food allergies by building on the skills and strategies you practiced while growing up and expanding on them for adult settings. This website along with my book Adulting with Food Allergies: Navigating Independence After Leaving Home helps you to identify and apply strategies for settings you are just beginning to face.
But what at if you do not feel like you developed great skills for food allergy management when you were young? Maybe your parents took care of everything, or food allergies are new to you? This book will also benefit you to open your eyes to things you need to consider.
